About Us

Welcome at Miniature Donkey Farm Mousny Hills.

So, you want to know little more about who we are, where and how we are living, what we are doing, ... and why we all do this .

English proverb : If the first thing you hear in the morning is a donkey's bray, make a wish and it will come true.

Some time ago we decided to change our way of living. We, Véronique & Anthon, have choosen to abord the hectic live of our professional business and we decided to settle in the very quiet and little village Mousny in the Belgian Ardennes. A small community, part of the larger La Roche en Ardenne, counting barely 60 residents. Mousny is also not far from the legendary city Bastogne, mostly known from the very cold winter '44-'45 during world war 2.

If you 'Google' Mousny, you'll find the legend of Jesus travelling the region as a pilgrim, asking for some water at a shepard, escorting his sheep with his dog. As the shepard refused the unknown traveler he, his dog and his sheep were turned into rocks: 'The White Rocks of Mousny' locally know as 'Les Blancs Cailloux'

Saudi proverb : I am a prince and you are a prince; who will lead the asses ?

Mousny is pure and 'overwhelming' nature. A place were one can hear no noises, no cars, no nothing. Only nature.

With other words, as far as heaven excists: Heaven on earth.

We started construction of our low energy/passive house in early 2009 on the plot we bought some years ago. The second part of the same year we were focused mainly on the constructing and finishing side of our new home. As winters can be very harsh in the Belgian Ardennes, we wanted to be winter-ready by the end of november 2009.

This year we also decided 'to do' something with 'animals'. We have always loved animals, have had dogs for years, since 4 years a Labrador lady-dog and a large aquarium, but we didn't have an idea, yet, which animals exactly.

Belgian proverb : While the stallions kick each other, the asses eat hay.

As time passed, construction on the house continued, in the meantime plans were also made for the garden, pond, etc., ideas were unfolded how to arrange all this together with the space where wanted to house the animals.

After some time we got the idea to get some miniatures donkeys. We looked on the world wide web to get all the info and feedback possible.    We came in contact with Christine from Falcoo Hoeve near Brugge, visited her and had a 'veeeeery loooooooong' talk and went also to Hanneke Louwman in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. Where we would stay an hour, but were we stayed all afternoon after all. We fell in love with these wonderfull miniature donkeys on the spot !

Getting some fine nice miniature donkeys is one, having the place for them is an other issue. We have a lot of space available, but had no stables, no fences, etc . We were not organised, yet, to house some donkeys . Thus, we took our time as we still had a lot of work to do at the house, thought it all over for some weeks and decided after a while to purchase some donkeys. One grey jennet with her 6 old red/brown year foal came over from Red Oak Farm in Ierland and two coal-black 1 year jennets from Hanneke Louwman, who imported them some months earlier from the U.S.

Proverb : There are many two-legged donkeys

We purchased the necessary wood for fencing and stables, bought a shovel and got started.

8 weeks later we welcomed our first 2 mini-donkeys.

German proverb : Donkeys that bray eat last.

A few months later we looked 'around' to find our way in Donkey-world, as we wanted to get some more excellent animals. Then we were offered a very small and tremendous boy- donkey (called a jack) residing in the United Kingdom. Man, is Tynchy outstanding. We also bought a second jack in Calgary Canada, together with two very exceptional lady- donkeys ( Jennets) . In Texas we acquired another additonal 5 nice jennets. All  donkeys were selected from their top- pedigrees, their conformation, their colors and also with our ideas and future visions in mind . We only wanted to purchase the finest miniature donkeys we could find to get our farm 'started', building on a firm foundation and basis, following our own bloodline . Some of these donkeys are already at our farm for some time, others will arrive soon at their new home.

The rest .... is history.

Or 'future'.  Depends how you want to see it. We prefer the latter.

You can find all the information of our Miniature Donkeys Farm on this website. Do you have any remark, a question, whatever ..... feel free to get in touch and let us getting to know you too.

Answering the question on top of this page 'why we all do this' ?

Rather simple : Miniature Donkeys are very special animals.

Danish proverb : Make yourself an ass and you will soon have every man's sack to carry.

No explanation has to be done if you .... visit our farm, see them, touch and feel them, enjoy and love them, live and play with them, .... If you don't have donkeys, yet, give them a chance. They're sure to steal your heart. Too.

Welcome to donkey- world !

Turkish proverb : An ass is beautiful in the eyes of an ass.

Calon lân

Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na'i berlau mân:
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lân.

Calon lân yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lân all ganu
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.

Pe dymunwn olud bydol,
Hedyn buan ganddo sydd;
Golud calon lân, rinweddol,
Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd.

Hwyr a bore fy nymuniad
Gwyd i'r nef ar adain cân
Ar i Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad,
Roddi i mi galon lân.

I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.

A pure heart full of goodness
Is fairer than the pretty lily,
None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and sing in the night.

If I wished for worldly wealth,
It would swiftly go to seed;
The riches of a virtuous, pure heart
Will bear eternal profit.

Evening and morning, my wish
Rising to heaven on the wing of song
For God, for the sake of my Saviour,
To give me a pure heart.
